Percussion instructors at major Universities across the country have customized and taught jazz drumming concepts for many years. The reason: jazz drumming techniques are the quintessential way to teach drumset students how to be great musicians, no matter what style of music they ultimately pursue. Concepts such as part composition, improvisation, musical interaction, finesse, tonality, melody and harmony become ingrained into their musical senses.

As
well, there are several books that deal with jazz drumming
topics such as comping, ride cymbal techniques and patterns,
and even trading fours. Many books also incorporate a CD with
original jazz play-along tunes. But to my knowledge, there
is no book available, specifically designed for the drumset
player, that definitively combines these topics with the actual
jazz standards that a drummer is likely to play on a gig...
until now!
